About Me

My first writing endeavour was an Alvin Purple-esque adventure about a testosterone driven, lowly paid milkman's assistant (yep, it was largely autobiographical, and, not surprisingly, never finished). Back then - way back in the 70s - the thought never crossed my mind that I could make a living writing. Shame on you Rotorua Boys' High School! So to pay the bills I've worked in banking most of my adult life.

Around about the same time as the milkman's assistant was being birthed, I started taking photos with an Instamatic 110. Over the years I graduated to a mid-range Nikon camera, and reckoned I had a pretty good eye. But, of course, (thanks again RBHS!) I couldn't imagine making a living taking photographs either. So, banking it was for me.

For several years, though, I was a minister. Of religion not Parliament, but looking back I was probably not a very good one. I genuinely loved connecting with people, but I despised the ritual and the stifling restriction inherent in religion. The human soul is not made for ritual and restriction. God and I had a philosophical parting of the ways in 1994.

I enjoy researching and writing, the essence of feature articles and novels. I’ve yet to unleash anything major, but I can feel it building. I’ve got a novel finished (first draft), a couple more in various stages of done, and an idea that I’m obsessed about and can’t wait to begin writing. I've also got a couple of feature articles "out there" (for sale).

Meanwhile, my wife and I spend most of our spare time catering to a demanding seven year old. I have two teenage sons, and a step-son who lives in Wellington.

I am keenly interested in current affairs – politics, crime and punishment, freedom of speech v. censorship – and social issues such as euthanasia and suicide, community, and matters of the human soul. I’m also a bit of a history buff, and enjoy anything related to the American War Between the States (as if any war could be "civil"). One of my goals in that regard is to find a definitive link between one or more New Zealanders and that war, and to write about it. I also love old photographs. One of my ongoing research projects is into various Banjo Bands that played in Christchurch in the early 20th Century. One day I fully intend to learn to play the banjo I have gathering dust beside my bed.

I enjoy American sports, baseball (Atlanta Braves!) and college football (Alabama!). In fact, I enjoy all things American. If it's possible to have a spiritual home, for me it's somewhere in the South.

I'm so enjoying the photography, and like most photographers I'm on a quest to take the PERFECT photo. Here's another link to my Flickr page.

I have a degree in Religious Studies with a minor in ethics and philosophy, and a certificate in Freelance Journalism.

I love putting words and pictures together, expressing ideas and truths. No matter what the project, it deserves the greatest respect. This is the philosophy I will bring to your project. Please contact me so we can discuss your project.
